Lefkada with kids: gentle beaches, calm bays and Ema's tips

Where the water entry is gentle, where to find shade at noon and which activities genuinely work with little ones. The family guide, built from parents' questions.

Lefkada is one of the most family-friendly Greek islands: short distances, calm water on the east coast, villas with pools and gardens, tavernas where children are welcome everywhere. But "with kids" changes the criteria: suddenly what matters is the water entry, the shade and how close you can park.

This guide is built from the questions parents send me every summer.

The beaches that work with little ones

Kathisma is the family star of the west coast: fine sand, sunbeds, showers and beach bars a few steps away. Go in the morning, when the sea is calm and the car park still free. Close to town, Agios Ioannis stays shallow far out, with the windmills as a backdrop.

On the east side, the small beaches of Nikiana and Nidri are quiet and perfect for a daily routine with zero logistics.

The calm bays: Desimi and Mikros Gialos

When the wind blows on the west coast, families move south-east. The bays of Desimi and Mikros Gialos are sheltered, with lake-flat water, olive-tree shade and tavernas right on the beach. These are the places where afternoons pass by themselves.

Activities that work with children

A boat day to Meganisi wins at any age: calm coves for swimming, fish to follow with a mask, ice cream in the harbour. The walk to the Dimosari waterfall is short and shaded, just right for the hot hours.

In the evening, the Nidri waterfront and the pedestrian street in town replace any programme: a stroll, an ice cream, boats to watch.

Where to stay with kids

Families usually pick a villa with a pool and garden around Nidri or Nikiana: the children get space, the parents get a terrace, and the beach and shops stay a few minutes away. For the very small, ask me about cots and high chairs: I know exactly which of my stays have them.

The rhythm that saves the holiday

The recipe that never fails: beach in the morning until 12, sleep and shade at midday, then out again towards evening, at the pool or on the waterfront. August calls for extra shade; June and September are the months when everything becomes simple.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lefkada suitable for a baby?

Yes, especially on the east coast. Choose a stay with air conditioning and a kitchen, go to the beach in the morning and keep lunches in the shade.

Is there a hospital and are there pharmacies?

Yes: the hospital is in Lefkada Town, and you will find pharmacies in all the bigger resorts, including Nidri.

Which beaches should we avoid with small children?

Egremni, because of the many steps, and the wavy afternoons on the western beaches. With older children, go there in the morning.

What is the best month for a holiday with kids?

June and September: warm sea, gentle sun and a quiet island.
