When to visit Lefkada: a month-by-month guide from May to October
May is green and quiet, August is full of life, September has the warmest sea. What each month looks like on the island, told by someone who lives here all year.
All winter long I get the same question: "Ema, when is the best time to come?" The honest answer: it depends on what you're after. The island has a different character in May, in August and in October, and each version has its advantages.
I live here all year round, so I've seen every face of Lefkada. Here is what the season looks like, month by month, with no filtered photos.
May and early June: the green island
After the spring rains, Lefkada turns a shade of green you won't catch again all year. Temperatures climb towards 24-26 degrees, the beaches are empty and accommodation is at its best prices. The sea is still brisk, around 19-21 degrees: refreshing at noon, brave in the morning.
July and August: high season
This is the Lefkada of the photos: 25-26 degree water, long days, villages buzzing in the evening. It is also the most sought-after stretch, especially between 20 July and 20 August. On the famous beaches, Porto Katsiki or Kathisma, the car park fills before noon.
If you come in peak season, two simple rules: book your stay in winter and leave for the beach early, around 9. The island stays beautiful in August, you just need to be one step ahead of everyone else.
September: the month I recommend to friends
If you ask me, September is the most beautiful month. The sea is at its warmest after the summer, 24-25 degrees, the light turns soft and golden, and the crowds thin by the day. The tavernas have free sunset tables again, prices drop, hosts have time for stories.
It is the month of couples and of people who want the island at their own pace. Book a month ahead and you will still find very good options.
October: for quiet and for walking
Early October often still brings days of 22-25 degrees, good for a beach at noon and walks the rest of the day. Towards the end of the month the rains grow more frequent and many seasonal places shut their shutters.
It is the season of fresh olive oil and of the unhurried island, when you feel how the locals actually live. Not one for a first visit, but a Lefkada you come to love.
The afternoon wind, the small detail that matters
Every summer, an afternoon breeze rises from the sea on the west coast. At Kathisma you barely feel it, but in the bay of Vasiliki it is a blessing: windsurfers from all over Europe gather there. If you plan a day on the water, mornings are for smooth cruises, afternoons for sails.

From late July to mid-September, when it passes 25 degrees.
When is it most crowded?
Between 20 July and 20 August. For the summer atmosphere without the peak crowds, choose late June or late August.
Is May worth it?
Yes, if you love nature, hiking and quiet. For full beach days and a warm sea, wait until at least mid-June.
How far ahead should I book my stay?
For July-August, ideally in January-March. For June and September you will still find good options 2-3 months ahead.
