Boat tour to Meganisi & Skorpios
The Papanikolis cave, Skorpios island and turquoise bays
A day cruise from Nidri harbour through the Meganisi channel: you sail into the Papanikolis cave by boat, swim in secluded bays with turquoise water and pass Skorpios, the private island of the Onassis family. A stop at Vathi for lunch in a traditional taverna.
Leaving Nidri
The day starts in Nidri harbour, the island's busiest departure point. The boat sails slowly between the islets of Madouri and Sparti, where the poet Aristotelis Valaoritis built his home, then picks up speed towards the Meganisi channel.
The Papanikolis cave
The second-largest sea cave in Greece takes its name from the submarine that hid here in the Second World War. The boat sails straight in under the rock vault, and the light filtered through the water colours everything an electric blue.
Skorpios and the Onassis legend
You pass Skorpios, the private island where Aristotle Onassis married Jackie Kennedy. You don't set foot on land, but you take a swim in its bay of green-turquoise water, right beneath the pines that reach down to the sea.
Lunch at Vathi
The lunch stop is at Vathi, the main harbour of Meganisi, a fishing village with tavernas on the waterfront. Here you taste fresh fish and mezedes, before the gentle return to Nidri.
